My Journey Through Abuse

Habiba Kabiru, a 20-year-old from Konfarini, Sokoto North, faced relentless hardships. As the eldest of eight children, her family’s financial struggles forced them to live in her uncle’s house. When the house was sold, they were left homeless with no money for rent. To ease her family’s burden, Habiba began hair braiding to earn an income, but her challenges multiplied when she was hastily married off to an abusive husband.

Her husband not only disregarded her family’s struggles but subjected her to emotional and physical abuse. Within a short time, he abandoned her, leaving Habiba to face ridicule and shame over her failed marriage.

Amid her despair, Habiba’s sister introduced her to the Interpersonal Therapy Group (IPTG), a key intervention under the Plan Aspire project in partnership with the Life Helpers Initiative (LHI). Initially withdrawn and deeply despondent, Habiba hesitated to engage. However, the group provided a safe space for members to share their struggles and offer mutual support, which gave her comfort and hope.

At first, I didn’t think it would help,” Habiba shared. “But as I listened to others and saw their courage, I realized I wasn’t alone. That gave me the strength to speak.

Under the guidance of facilitator Assai, Habiba slowly opened up, sharing her experiences of abuse and abandonment. Through IPTG sessions, she learned coping strategies to rebuild her confidence and address her emotional wounds.

Habiba has come a long way,” Assai noted. “When she first joined, she was withdrawn and deeply hurt. Now, she actively participates, smiles, and even encourages others in the group.”

Within a month, Habiba’s mental health improved significantly. She started to smile more, participate actively in discussions, and even began setting small goals for herself.

My parents are so happy,” Habiba said. “They say they’ve seen a new side of me they thought was lost forever.

Her parents also expressed heartfelt gratitude to the group for the transformation in their daughter, noting how her renewed sense of hope and strength had a positive ripple effect on the entire family. Today, Habiba continues to grow emotionally and mentally stronger, using her experiences to inspire others in the group. She is determined to rebuild her life and contribute meaningfully to her family’s welfare.
